At Screen Auckland, we’re working to identify ways the screen sector can help contribute to a more sustainable Aotearoa.

The New Zealand Screen Sector Emissions Study, produced by Screen Auckland in partnership with Arup, seeks to understand the climate impacts of the sector so together, we can map out a transition to sustainability.

Worth $1.1 billion (GDP) to the region’s economy and employing 7500 Aucklanders, the screen sector offers ongoing opportunities for highly skilled creative and technical work in Tāmaki Makaurau.

It’s clear if we want to continue to realise the benefits of the sector, and our position as a fantastic place to create screen content, we must understand its climate impacts and actively work to reduce these.

Inspired by the work of screen agencies internationally and by our own local and central government in setting targets for emissions reduction, the New Zealand Screen Sector Emissions Study provides a high-level estimation of the screen sector’s carbon impact.

In addition, interviews with government agencies, associations, guilds and screen industry professionals provide insights to perceived opportunities and challenges the sector faces as it transitions towards more sustainable practice.

Key findings

The study revealed the following opportunities and challenges to a more sustainable screen sector.

Opportunities

  • Develop a nationally consistent carbon measurement and management framework
  • Develop tools to accelerate consistent data collection and provide the capability for effective sustainable production planning
  • Tie government screen incentive funding with a commitment to data collection and carbon reporting
  • Build on the foundations of existing successful cross-sector collaborations to develop and adopt sector-wide sustainability guidelines

Challenges

  • Lack of clear sector-specific direction from government and dedicated resources to support a transition to sustainable practices
  • Lack of education and tools for screen professionals to transition towards sustainable practice
  • The perception that transitioning towards sustainable practice is difficult and costly
  • Limited access to offshore production companies' data makes it challenging to quantify the impact.

What’s next

Over the coming months, Screen Auckland and Arup will work with the sector to achieve a detailed assessment of its environmental impacts, developing a vision and commitment to transition towards more sustainable practice.

We look forward to you joining us on this journey to a more sustainable future.
