Finding a place to call home brings you another step closer to your new life in Auckland.
From large family homes in leafy outer suburbs, through to compact apartments in the heart of the city, there’s a range of options to suit you, your family and your budget.
When they first arrive, many people choose to rent a house or an apartment before buying a home. This is a great way of getting to know the city better before committing to an area.
Here are some things to consider when choosing a rental location:
- Where will you be working? Auckland is geographically large; it pays to have an understanding of where you’ll be based. Nearby suburbs may be the best option for a stress-free commute.
- What sort of lifestyle are you after? The hustle and vibe of the inner city, with bars and restaurants only a stone’s throw away? Coastal living allowing you to easily enjoy your favourite water sports? Or perhaps the rural/urban fringe flanked by forests and farmland is perfect for you?
- How will you get around – car, bus, ferry, train, bike or on foot? This will also have a bearing on the right location for you. Check out Auckland Transport’s website to discover the public transport options in and around Auckland.
- If you have children, what are the schools like in the area you’re considering? There are lots of ways to find information about the schools in your area. All New Zealand schools are reviewed at least every three years by the Education Review Office (ERO) and reports are published online. A school’s website will also give you valuable information.
- What sort of accommodation would best suit you? Auckland has a mix of rental options in different areas. There are fully-furnished inner-city apartments, moderate to large sized three+ bedroom family homes on sprawling sections in outer suburbs, or townhouses and units with smaller, low-maintenance gardens in suburbs closer to the city.
Once you’ve decided on a location, you will want to get an understanding of how the rental market works here.
Tenancy Services provides information on the Residential Tenancy Act which outlines the laws, regulations and standards that govern the residential rental market in New Zealand.
Immigration New Zealand also provides useful information to help in your decision-making.
Websites such as www.trademe.co.nz, www.realestate.co.nz and www.oneroof.co.nz all provide residential rental listings searchable on location, accommodation type, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, and weekly rent.
A quick search will give you a good understanding of the Auckland rental market - helping you find the perfect place to call home.
