Global ICT solutions provider, Huawei Technologies, established its Auckland office in 2005 and quickly became a leading player in the development of New Zealand's telecommunications industry.
Huawei, established in the technology city of Shenzhen in 1987, has helped build mobile and fixed line broadband networks in New Zealand, joined the government's Ultra Fast and Rural Broadband projects, led the sales of smart phones and home devices, and launched its Enterprise business to support local businesses.
The Auckland office is now home to more than 120 staff, and Huawei New Zealand’s activities directly contribute more than $50 million annually to the local economy based on wages, partnerships with local suppliers, and sub-contracting for major infrastructure projects.
"Huawei provides a fantastic opportunity for highly skilled New Zealanders to work with an industry-leading company. It’s also allowed others to return home after working in the telecommunications industry overseas, bringing their knowledge and experience back to the New Zealand market," says Huawei NZ public affairs manager, Nick Wilson.
Huawei NZ first partnered with 2degrees (then known as Econet) to build its nationwide mobile network, creating a third major player in the mobile market. In 2012 2degrees reached the one million customer milestone and the two companies extended their exclusive technology partnership, launching a 4G LTE network in 2014.
Huawei NZ then built Vodafone's fixed line network called Red Network, after upgrading its Mobile Backhaul with fibre access, and now provides ongoing monitoring services.
Spark (formerly Telecom), New Zealand's largest network provider, teamed up with Huawei NZ in 2013 to build the cutting-edge 4G LTE Ultra Mobile network. The companies have also launched a joint innovation programme to shape future products.
"What most impressed us [about Huawei] was that it had more than 70,000 engineers globally working in research and development," says said Spark chief technology officer, David Havercroft.
Huawei NZ is a key technology contributor and operations manager for the Ultra Fast (fibre optic) Broadband project, partnering with Ultra Fast Fibre and Enable Networks Ltd to build 30 per cent of the network. The Chinese multi-national had earlier established similar networks in Britain, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and United Arab Emirates.
New Zealand's three major operators, Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees, also sell Huawei's latest devices ranging from smart phones and tablets to video communications, broadband modems, fixed wireless terminals and digital photo frame.
Huawei NZ is prepared to invest and play a positive role in the local community. In 2012, Huawei NZ brought a delegation of senior procurement executives to New Zealand, and as result the company announced a $US54 million contract with Auckland-based manufacturer, Rakon. Huawei is using Rakon's frequency control products in its smart phones and devices.
Huawei’s own travel company Smartcom began promoting Auckland and New Zealand as a holiday destination. And its Auckland office announced a High Achievers scholarship programme with Auckland University of Technology (AUT), and the recipients spend two weeks in the Shenzhen research and development labs, as well as receiving a contribution toward their study.
